It’s been awhile since I’ve posted, but in the wake of recent events, I felt compelled to write. Once again terrorism has struck, killing innocent people in Paris and Beirut. I am saddened by the tragic loses and for those who have lost loved ones. I saw this picture on Rick Steves’ Facebook page and it reminded me that we must stand united and not be terrorized. Yes, it’s scary times, but if we hide in fear then we’ve given up and they’ve won.
Paris is a huge travel destination, and I hope for those who have future plans to visit do not cancel. Paris is a beautiful city with so much old world charm…it would be such a shame to miss out. It’s always the big question of do I travel or don’t I when terrorism hits. I remember my first trip to Europe in August 1985. I was in high school, and I was traveling with my fellow students to London, Paris, and Italy.
On June 23, 1985, Air India Flight 182 on the Montreal, Canada – London, UK – Delhi, India route was bombed and 329 people were killed. I remember I was frozen with fear as I was about to embark on a lifetime adventure. The school called an emergency meeting to determine if we should proceed with the trip. Everyone was frightened, but ultimately we decided not to let this terrifying act dictate our travel plans. We went on with our expedition and it was one of the best experiences I had.
The picture above says it all – Don’t be terrorized! Let’s pray for peace and for those who are suffering from these tragic acts.
And don’t hide in fear. Instead…
