The Keuka Lake Surprise

Keuka Lake

It’s hard to believe we actually pulled it off! A year in planning the big Keuka Lake surprise for my mom’s 70th birthday. My father wanted to plan a week getaway for my mom’s special day. For years, she wanted the entire family to do a trip to the lake. The original plan was to try to find something around Cape Cod, but ultimately we settled on The Finger Lake Region: Keuka Lake.

First, let me mention it is not easy to find a place to accommodate 10 people: my parents; my sister, husband, and two kids; my brother and his wife, and myself with my daughter. Needless to say, finding Keuka Lodge was like striking gold. The lodge is an amazingly beautiful five bedroom/bathroom lodge nestled perfectly in the woods just above and across the street from the lake.

About 300 feet down the road we had lake access with two kayaks and a canoe that we could take out for a spin. One couldn’t ask for anything better!

Talk about getting out of the daily grind… this property was the perfect elixir that I needed.

Well, actually what everyone needed. I can’t remember the last time I’ve been this relaxed! Vacation always puts me in a relaxed state, but generally I like to be on the go and discover what’s new in my surroundings. This trip was a little different; knowing there wasn’t much to do around the lake area it allowed me to keep still for a second.

Of course we took one day to explore the wineries which are part of the Keuka Lake wine trail. So many to choose from, we settled on two by recommendation – Dr. Konstantin Frank’s Vinifera Wine Cellars and Heron Hill Winery.

My sister and I being the wine aficionados, we were the only two to partake in the tasting, but the rest of the family got to enjoy the incredible scenic views of the lake. Dr. Frank turned out to have the better tasting wine for my palette, but in my opinion, Heron Hill had the more breathtaking views.

Only a day and a half of rain, we had plenty of opportunities to enjoy the lake by kayaking, canoeing, and swimming; hiking; do yoga; read; play games; sleep; and a fun night by the fire pit making s’mores.

Overall, this birthday surprise turned out to be a vacation for all to remember. I am truly grateful and loved having the opportunity to spend it with my family.
